Sixth Form

Co-educational Sixth Form in Edinburgh for 17 and 18 year olds

Our ESMS Sixth Form is a co-educational community of students with its own identity and individual approach which helps to prepare students for life beyond school. Young men and women make new friendships and prepare together for life and education after school. In addition to their academic work, pupils learn to be independent, responsible and self-motivated students.

Meet our Director of Sixth Form, Mrs Frances McCrudden, in the video below and find out more about what makes the ESMS Sixth Form so special.

A pre-university year

During their final year at school, students enjoy a genuine pre-university experience. They are divided into small tutor groups with a personal tutor who directs them towards more independent and creative modes of thinking, writing and behaving. Tutors also offer help with UCAS statements, preparing for university interviews and providing references both informally and through our guidance structure.

We don't just want our students to get to their post school destination of choice, we want them to thrive when they get there. There is an emphasis in lessons on developing independent learning skills and students are taught in small tutorial style groups. Students all have study periods on their timetables in which they can take advantage of the dedicated Sixth Form study rooms on each site or enjoy a chat in the common rooms. An important part of the Sixth Form experience is learning to take more responsibility not just for yourself but for others. All of our Sixth Form students are prefects, many participate in buddying with younger pupils, take leadership positions in clubs and societies and complete a huge range of community service projects across the school and in wider society.
There are over a 100 clubs in the senior schools. Sport and Performing Arts are a particular strength but a plethora of students' interests can be pursued including student newspapers, pipe band, philosophy, ukulele club, coding and fencing (or set up your own!)
Our students make successful applications to a huge range of courses across the UK, North America and Europe – including Cambridge, Glasgow, Harvard, London School of Economics, and a huge range of other universities and conservatoires. Our Higher Education Co-ordinators offer a drop-in service to help students explore their options. Each student is also given a tutor at the start of the year who mentors and coaches them through the year and supports them with their UCAS application. Heads of Careers at both MES and SMC are on hand to support students with applications to Further Education Colleges and Graduate and Modern Apprenticeships. We also run a range of initiatives to help pupils discover future career paths which might interest them. These include medical seminars, interview practice, work experience in France and Germany and a full programme of speakers and events designed to help your child explore courses and industries they may not have previously considered. To help prepare students for life after school students take part in Preparation for Adult Life Seminars which include sessions on managing your finances at university, managing mental health and consent.
